MEDICATIONS FOR OPIOID AND ALCOHOL USE DISORDERS
BUPRENORPHINE (SUBOXONE, SUBLOACID)
Patients whose treatment includes buprenorphine, or any other controlled substance, are typically seen more frequently than patients who are not taking medications with a high risk of abuse. Gradually visits become more spread out as the patient’s symptoms improve. Usually a patient will be seen weekly for at least 4 weeks before stretching out visit intervals to 2 weeks and ultimately to once every 4-6 weeks.
Read more about this controlled substance on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) page on buprenorphine, or in this buprenorphine article on the National Institute of Health (NIH) site.
Buprenorphine is not the only medication that has shown to be effective in treating opioid addiction. Ask us about other treatment options and the potential risks and benefits of each to make an informed decision.
NALTREXONE (VIVTROL)
Naltrexone is the FDA Approved treatment for moderate to severe opioid use disorder as well as alcohol use disorder. It is a drug that blocks the effects of opioids, and suppresses cravings for opioids and alcohol.
It is not a controlled substance.
To read more about it visit the naltexone page on the SAMHSA website. For more technical information, visit the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)’s page on oral naltrexone or the NCBI page on injectable naltrexone.
Ask us about the benefits of injectable naltrexone over the tablet.
